County Kerry has a number of preserved sacred wells. Most have existed from pre-Christian times, making them very old.  They are heritage sites - honored for their links with the past. They are sacred sites - honored for their links with spirituality. They are nature sites - honored for their links with nature.  They are local sites that are part of the community which surrounds them and has protected them over many generations.

This website announces a recent publication (2007) about some of the sacred wells in north County Kerry, Ireland.

' In honour of nature: the sacred well in a new time ' by Mary Shanahan

This book will appeal to those with an interest in and a devotion to sacred wells as well as to those who are looking for an introduction to the sacred wells and to the Celtic spiritual tradition.

If you have a concern about the environment and an interest in ecology and in local history you too will find something useful within the covers of this publication.

To young people in secondary schools or colleges who are looking for a subject to research - a subject such as sacred wells, water, the land, Celtic religion and spirituality or the  history of local communities in rural settings- you may find inspiration and encouragement for a research idea in this easy to read publication.

Visitors to the county, seeking an alternative experience to the well-known tourist attractions will also find the book a useful resource and guide, with its detailed description about where the wells are located and how to get to each well site.

The overall focus of the book includes themes of social justice, pilgrimage, spirituality, the environment and local history. Connections are made between these ancient well-sites and some of today's social, ecological and spiritual issues and concerns.
